A fork‑type separator is a simple tool: two prongs (fork), which you fit around the ball joint taper, then hit with a hammer (or sometimes use leverage) to force the joint to pop out. Also called a “pickle fork” by some, though strictly speaking pickle forks are more aggressive and often damage the joint boot, while a proper separator aims to preserve surrounding components.

The separator uses the forked, leverage method – Requires a hammer blow to drive a wedge between the ball joint and track control arm.
The puller and remover use pressure applied by means of a screw thread to force the tapered ball joint out of place.

| Jaw (“fork”) width | Needs to be wide enough to fit around the joint’s tapered stud / taper, but narrow enough to get in between components. If too wide, can’t reach; too narrow, weak or splinters. |
| Throat depth / reach | Longer tools let you reach joints that are recessed or obstructed. But big/fat ones can be harder to manoeuvre. |
| Fork prong thickness | Stronger prongs resist bending or breaking. If thin, they’ll deform under hammer blows. |
| Material & heat‑treatment | Forged carbon steel or similar hardened steel is best. Hardened & tempered steel lasts longer, resists bending. |
| Handle / grip / knurling | Good grip helps if you need to swing or hit with a hammer and hold it steady. Knurled shaft or handle helps. |
