Bi‑hex (12‑point) sockets have twice as many contact points around the fastener as a 6‑point socket. This allows more positions to engage the fastener, useful in tight spaces because you don’t need to rotate the socket very far to get another engagement.
Bi‑hex sockets tend to distribute torque differently; under high torque or on rounded/low‑profile fasteners, 6‑point sockets are often preferred since they grip more of the flat side of the fastener and reduce chances of rounding.
