PLASTIGAUGE is a Soft, Deformable Plastic Rod or Strip of known cross-sectional dimensions used to measure clearance (i.e. the small gap) between bearing surfaces (or other “hidden” fitted surfaces). You insert the strip between the surfaces (for example between a crank journal and bearing shell), torque the cap or housing to spec, and the strip flattens. The amount it spreads (width) is inversely related to the original clearance. You then compare the flattened width to a calibrated scale supplied with the gauge to read off the clearance.

It provides a Direct Measurement rather than relying on assumptions about geometry or average surfaces.

It reveals local variation in clearance (i.e. you can see if one part of the bearing is tighter than another)

PLASTICUAGE – ABRIDGED – INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
- Remove the sump, following the manufacturers recommendations. Wipe away surplus oil from the big-end regions.
- Release each big-end shell, in turn, by unscrewing the set-screws.
- Wipe the exposed bearing surface of the journal and the shell
- Apply a smear of mineral grease (PLASTIGUAGE lubricant “A”) to the journal. Apply a smear of silicone grease (PLASIGUAGE lubricant “B”) to the shell
- Trim a length of PLASTIGAUGE to fit across the journal, using the grease to hold it in place. Replace the shell and lighten the retaining set screws to the manufacturers recommended torque setting without rotation of the journal.
- Now remove each shell once again to reveal the PLASTIGUAGE which will have been spread across the bearing surface as a stripe or band.
- Match the width of the PLASTIGUAGE stripe against the card gauge supplied and read off the bearing clearance.
