Purpose & Usage
-
Cutting / initial polishing stage: Sisal mops are more aggressive than standard stitched cotton mops. They are typically used as a first stage polishing tool to remove grinding marks, flatten surfaces, or do coarse blending of welds, castings, etc.
-
Materials: Often used on hard metals: stainless steel, steel, iron, harder brass etc. (On softer materials like aluminium, one has to control aggressiveness).
-
Compounds: Commonly used with cutting or “grey / heavy cut” compounds (e.g. Carbrax MG, Steelcut) to assist in material removal/polishing
- Aggressiveness High cutting action — good for removing deeper surface defects, but risk of overdoing on delicate surfaces
- Wear & durability With proper care and compound use, sisal mops can last well. The stitching and material quality matters.
- Speed / RPM Use at reasonable speeds to avoid overheating or damaging the workpiece.
- Separate mops for different compounds To avoid contamination, use separate sisal mops for each compound.
- Use matching backing / mounting Ensure the arbor, spindle, washer and mounting are compatible.
- Finish polishing after sisal stage After using sisal, follow up with softer mops (e.g. cotton, flannel) for finer finishing.
