What is Soda Blasting?

Soda Blasting is a method of abrasive blasting that uses Bicarbonate of Soda (more commonly known as "Baking Soda") as the media.

Developed in the mid 80's primarily for the purpose of cleaning the Statue of Liberty inside and out, Soda Blasting is perfect for delicate tasks requiring effectiveness without damage. There is no damage from heat warping as with abrasive blasting, but you have a smooth surface to work from. No danger or mess from chemical strippers and no hard labour from hand sanding

Common Uses for Soda Blasting

Soda as a blasting media has many uses. It is widely used in auto restoration to strip paint from metal and fibreglass car bodies while leaving trim glass and rubber in place, all without harm. It is also used for mould remediation, cleaning stains from concrete, fire damage removal, cleaning years of tarnish from copper and brass fixtures. It also has the ability to clean and degrease complex mechanical assemblies such as transmissions or rear axles with no harm to internal moving parts. Many folks also use it to clean under hood areas with no removal of or harm to components or wiring.

1/ Parts cleaning and degreasing

Degreasing complex mechanical assemblies such as engines, transmissions, carburettors or even entire engine compartments typically requires the use of a degreasing solvent, brushing and or pressure washing. These methods can be messy and time consuming. Removing carbon and combustion deposits from internal components represents an even greater challenge.

Soda Blasting is perfect for delicate tasks requiring effectiveness without damage. It also allows the user to gently and quickly strip away thick grease accumulations, carbon and fuel deposits, old paint and more without damage to precision mechanical assemblies, seals, wiring, and electrical components. It is completely harmless on aluminium components such as pistons and intake manifolds.

2/ Fire damage restoration

For many years the only method of removing the charred and blackened surface of otherwise sound wooden structural members after a fire was the extremely labour and time intensive method of scraping the charred material away. Even after all that work, the burned odour still remained.

You can now use the Soda Blasting method. It allows the user to gently and quickly strip away the burned and charred surface leaving clean bare wood exposed all without harming exposed wiring, piping or fixtures. The soda also provides the added benefit of absorbing the lingering burned odour.

3/ Mould removal

The most common methods for removing mould from building interiors have required expensive and specialized wet-vacuuming equipment and labour intensive wet wiping involving harsh chemicals. In addition to requiring a great deal and time and effort, these methods rely on the use of moisture - one of the prime causes of mould growth.

4/ Graffiti removal

They are several methods for dealing with graffiti. Painting over it is easiest however with many surfaces, this is undesirable or not possible. This leaves removal with limited results and secondary problems such as abrasive blasting which can cause surface damage and etching or the time and labour intensive use of hazardous chemicals.

Another option is the Soda Blasting method which allows the user to gently and quickly strip away spray painted graffiti leaving the base surface clean. Use safely on brick, plaster, vinyl, aluminium, glass, wood and more without damage.

5/ Stain Removal on Masonry

The most common methods for removing stains from concrete surfaces have been extremely labour intensive wire brushing, the use of hazardous acid chemical cleaners or silica based blast media. Brushing requires a great deal of time and effort, acids and abrasive blasting introduce a great deal of danger to the operator and environment. None certainly are desirable methods.

How to Prepare a Surface for Coatings After Soda Blasting

The soda leaves behind a thin film of pulverized Baking Soda on the bare metal surface which in itself acts as a protective film to prevent flash rust for a month or longer if kept inside and dry.

The step that many users fail to do is remove this pulverized baking soda film prior to painting. The correct method of doing this is to blow out any crevices or seams with a good stream of compressed air then using a clean cloth DAMPENED - (not soaked) in a bucket of hot, soapy water, wipe the surface removing the pulverized Baking Soda film, Rinse and wring frequently. When done, repeat the process with fresh, clean water, rinse and wring the cloth frequently.

After completion, do what the factory did and apply a metal surface etching solution such as Eastwood Self Etch primer and you will have a surface that's ready to coat.
