Classic Car Restoration
Nothing turns the head of a discerning motor enthusiast than the sight - and often the sound - of a perfectly restored classic car.
It’s one thing to boast owning a brand new car, but another to feel the delight of driving around for the first time in a classic car you have lovingly repaired for months,.
Up and down the country, millions of people have a little secret hiding in the garage; a restoration project under way; a plan for traveling in style next summer.
And the beauty of classic car restoration is that it is down to you how much effort you have to put in, how much help you call for, and how much you spend.
The first job, of course, is to get the car. Be it a classic Mini Cooper you’re hunting, or something more obscure like the quirky Austin Allegro and its square steering wheel, there are plenty of places to look.
A simple search on the internet can yield all sorts of treasures, while there are plenty of classic car trade magazines out there offering cars in various states of disrepair.
Of course, it’s advisable to give the car the once over in person before handing over cash for it - investing in a mechanic to come with you for an hour might seem like an extra expense but it could save you a lot more in the long run.
Possibly the most important thing is to make sure you don’t feel you are taking on more than you can handle, or are prepared to pay for. It might be that you just want something which only needs improvements to the bodywork. Alternatively, you might be prepared to take on chassis repairs, brake repairs and complete engine removal.
Once you have it safely stored at your home - preferably in a garage - the amount of work you put into it is entirely down to you. There’s plenty of advice out there, and nothing beats the voice of experience.
That advice can come from all manner of books, or from one of the thousands of classic car clubs dotted around the UK .
